Becoming a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) in Indiana is a rewarding path that offers numerous opportunities in the healthcare field. As a CNA, you’ll provide essential care to patients, supporting their daily needs and assisting nurses and other medical staff. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started on your journey to becoming a CNA in Indiana. Our Nurse Aide program at Indy Institute prepares you for a successful career!

Step 1: Meet the Basic Requirements

Before starting your CNA training at Indy Institute, ensure that you meet the following requirements:

  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Background Check: You must pass a criminal background check.
  • Health Screenings: You must complete a physical exam and provide proof of negative Tuberculosis results.
Step 2: Enroll in a State-Approved Nurse Aide Training Program

Indiana requires aspiring CNAs to complete a state-approved training program. The program typically includes:

  • Classroom Instruction: Covering basic nursing skills, patient care, infection control, and communication. 30 hours
  • Hands-On Clinical Training: Supervised practical experience in a healthcare setting which includes simulated lab and long term care facilities. 75 hours. At Indy Institute we’ve partnered with some of the best long term care facilities in Indianapolis and surrounding areas for your hands-on clinical experience.
Step 3: Pass the Indiana CNA Certification Exam

After completing your training, we collaborate with you to gather documents and information needed to submit your application for the state exam. The exam has two parts:

  • Written Exam: This tests your knowledge of CNA duties and patient care. Must be taken at Ivy Tech.
  • Skills Test: You will be asked to demonstrate various CNA skills in a simulated healthcare setting. This exam can be completed at Indy Institute

You must pass both sections to become certified. Once you complete your training at Indy Institute, we collaborate with you to gather documents and information needed to submit your application for the state exam.

Step 4: Get Listed on the Indiana Nurse Aide Registry

Once you pass the certification exam, your name will be added to the Indiana Nurse Aide Registry, which allows you to work as a CNA in the state. Employers can verify your certification status through this registry.

Step 5: Maintain Your Certification

To maintain your CNA certification in Indiana, you must renew it every two years. Renewal requirements include:

  • Proof of Employment: You must have worked at least 8 hours as a CNA during the certification period.
